The GEnx is the fastest-selling engine in GE Aviation history with more than 1,300 engines on order. Compared to GE's CF6 engine, the GEnx engine offers up to 15 percent better fuel consumption, which translates to 15 percent less CO2. The engine is a giant leap forward in propulsion technology, using the latest generation materials and design processes to reduce weight, improve performance and lower maintenance.
Key to this outstanding performance are technologies such as the high pressure compressor, the twin-annular pre-swirl (TAPS) combustor, and lightweight, durable composite materials and specialized coatings. It is the world's first commercial jet engine with both a front fan case and fan blades made of carbon fiber composite material. It is the quietest, most passenger-friendly commercial engine GE has ever produced.
One of GE Aviation's "firsts" was the carbon-fiber composite fan blade, which entered commercial service on the GE90 engine in 1995. The GEnx engine has taken this technology to the next level with new more efficient fan blade designs, a reduced fan blade count (18 blades) and a composite fan case.
The turbine on the GEnx is lighter and more efficient than previous engines. The GEnx incorporates the next generation of 3D aerodynamics in the Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) in addition to being the first engine to incorporate Ti Aluminide blades. When compared to previous LPT materials, the last two stages in the LPT can save about 400 lbs per engine.
The GEnx-1B is purpose designed for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner family. It delivers upto 15% better specific fuel consumption than the engine it replaces, a 2% fuel burn advantage over its competition and a 1% advantage with fuel burn retention.
The GEnx-2B is optimized for the Boeing 747-8 airplane, with a smaller fan, de-staged booster and low-pressure turbine. The -2B contains an identical core and similar materials as the -1B, delivering synergies for mixed GEnx fleets.
